ElevateHer: Elevating Women Within Their Workplaces

ElevateHer is a ground-breaking, three-year initiative led by Times Change, designed to address systemic barriers to women’s advancement in Canadian workplaces, with a particular emphasis on supporting marginalized communities. Funded by the Government of Canada through Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE), ElevateHer is set to build sustainable pathways for women’s advancement by developing and implementing customized mentorship and sponsorship programs in collaboration with employers, community leaders, and DEI experts.

Program Goals:

Our mission is to drive gender equity and foster inclusive leadership by collaborating with employers committed to workplace transformation. The core goals of ElevateHer are to: 

  • Dismantle Systemic Barriers: Identify and address the challenges women face in achieving advanced roles, focusing on sustainable solutions. 
  • Develop Customized Mentorship & Sponsorship Programs: Work with employers to design initiatives that support women’s career progression. 
  • Engage Employers and Stakeholders: Foster a collaborative environment where employers, women, and experts shape policies that drive impactful change in Canadian workplaces. 

How You Can Get Involved:

Research shows that targeted mentorship and sponsorship can significantly boost women’s career advancement and help create more equitable workplaces. There are several ways you can be part of this change:

  • Employers: Partner with us to implement these programs within your organization, advancing gender equity from within. 
  • Women: Collaborate with us and join our focus groups and consultations to share your experiences, helping shape programs that address real workplace needs. 
  • Community Organizations: Collaborate on our advisory council to co-create resources and share best practices that support diversity and inclusion.

The Times Change Breaking Barriers (BB) Program

Funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada, the Businesses Breaking Barriers program provides employers with the tools and resources they need to implement effective DEI strategies. Our personalized approach starts with a company-wide culture assessment, followed by a tailored action plan focused on increasing the representation and advancement of underrepresented employees.

Key Diversity and Inclusion Training Topics

  • Our DEI training consultations cover a wide range of topics, including:
  • Workplace Assessment: We’ll conduct initial workplace assessments to identify your DEI priorities and develop a roadmap for success.
  • Inclusive Recruitment: We’ll help you broaden your recruitment strategies to reach diverse candidates, update interview questions to eliminate bias, and connect with community partners.
  • Retaining Talent: We’ll implement professional development programs, mentorship initiatives, and employee resource groups to foster a supportive and engaging work environment.
  • Advancement and Leadership: We’ll assist in creating allyship guidelines, identifying mental health resources, and developing sponsorship programs to promote equitable career advancement.

Meet the team

Our experienced team combines expertise and dedication to advancing women in leadership. Led by Collective members Diana and Chris, and supported by Horia as Program Coordinator and Busra as Program Assistant, we bring extensive backgrounds in gender equity and women’s empowerment.  

With a strong commitment to inclusive workplace practices and initiatives facilitating women’s advancement, we work directly with employers, community groups, and individuals to ensure ElevateHer’s impact is both meaningful and responsive.

Empowering Women in Leadership: ElevateHer Mentorship and Sponsorship Program

We were thrilled to participate in the RBC Advancement of Women in Leadership event in Novemeber , in support of United Way Greater Toronto, where our ElevateHer program took center stage. 
 
Our Program Coordinator, Horia Sardarzada, joined an inspiring panel alongside Anita Carroll from ACCES Employment and Agapi Gessesse, Executive Director of CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals. Together, they explored strategies to empower women, dismantle systemic barriers, and promote leadership through mentorship and sponsorship models. Through engaging discussions and strategic collaboration, we highlighted the impactful work of our ElevateHer program and its focus on mentorship and sponsorship as essential strategies for advancing women in Canadian workplaces. 
 
What We Shared: 
  • Strategies and Action Items: Sharing practical approaches and action plans for tackling systemic barriers, in collaboration with organizations dedicated to advancing women’s leadership. 
  • Collaboration for Change: Exploring how collective action can drive progress and create more inclusive, equitable workplace environments. 
  • By partnering with like-minded organizations and thought leaders, we aim to shape workplaces where women can lead with confidence and authenticity. Together, we’re making impactful strides toward a future of empowered women leaders.
